Governors Implore President to Maintain Support of Ethanol, Deny RFS Waiver Credit Scheme
LINCOLN, NEBRASKA, March 15 – Today a coalition of six Midwest governors, including Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts, sent a letter to President Donald Trump thanking him for his support of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and rural America. The letter also implored the president to deny Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s RFS waiver credit scheme (also referred to as a RIN price cap), which would destroy over a billion gallons of biofuels demand.
Renewable Fuels Nebraska Executive Director Troy Bredenkamp made the following statement regarding the multi-governor letter:
“This letter signed by several Midwest governors is an important reminder to President Trump and his administration to keep his commitment to rural voters and American made ethanol. Any agreement to Senator Cruz scheme to cap RIN prices would gut the effectiveness of the RFS in maintaining ethanol for consumers in the marketplace, reduce corn prices by 25 cents per bushel, and negatively impact Nebraska’s farm economy by over $421 million according to the Nebraska Farm Bureau.”
“We applaud these governors for reminding President Trump that adoption of the Cruz scheme would directly violate his promise to rural voters to uphold RFS levels and his promise to protect biofuels and American farmers. RFN commends Governor Ricketts for his continued support of Nebraska’s ethanol industry, strong leadership on the RFS issue with the Trump Administration and working with his fellow governors across the Midwest to remind the President of the important role ethanol and a robust RFS plays in Nebraska rural economy.”
In addition to Ricketts, the letter was signed by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, Missouri Governor Eric Greitens, and Kansas Governor Jeff Colyer.
